Agricultural and non-agricultural outputs and energy consumption in Tunisia: empirical evidences from cointegration and causality AgEcon
Chebbi, Houssem Eddine; Boujelbene, Y..
This short paper investigates the cointegration and causality link between energy consumption and agricultural, non-agricultural outputs (manufacturing sector and services sector) and overall gross domestic product in Tunisia for 1971-2003 period. Empirical results suggest that there is only unidirectional causality running from agricultural and non-agricultural sectors to energy consumption as well as from overall GDP growth to energy consumption. This unidirectional causality signifies a less energy dependent economy and suggests that it is sectoral growth that drives the energy consumption in Tunisia and not vice versa. Empirical results suggest also that Tunisian agricultural sector growth does not depend on energy, and high consumption of energy do...

Effect of heat insulation on the energy consumption of recirculating mixed-flow batch grain dryer CIGR Journal
Jokiniemi, Heikki Tapani; Ahokas, Jukka Matias.
The effects of heat insulation on the energy consumption and efficiency of a recirculating mixed-flow type grain dryer were examined.  Energy saving potential was estimated by theoretical calculations and by heat flow measurements.  Actual energy consumption was measured in two identical drying silos, only one of which was insulated.  The measurements were conducted in farm-scale dryers under practical farm working conditions.  Theoretical heat loss calculations and the heat flow measurements predicted an energy saving potential of ca. 5%–9% of the dryer heating energy.  However, the actual energy consumption measurements over three years indicated energy savings of 16%–21% for the insulated dryer compared to its uninsulated counterpart, when energy...

Omid, Mahmoud; Khanali, Majid; Zand, Sajad.
The goal of this study was to examine the energy flows for poultry breeding in broiler production farms in Alborz province of Iran. Data were obtained randomly from 30 poultry production farms using a face to face questionnaire method. The results indicated that the total input energy was 189805.48 MJ per 1000 birds, while the output energy was 28151.17 MJ/(1000 bird). Net energy was negative, -161654.31 MJ/(1000 bird), implying that energy had been lost. Energy use efficiency was calculated as 0.15, showing the inefficient use of energy in the broiler production farms. The fuel energy (energy content of the fuel) with a share of 58.35% had the highest share of input energy and the feed energy by 29.71% was the next. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emission of the...

Influencing factors on agricultural transports and their effect on energy consumption and average speed CIGR Journal
Götz, Sebastian; Zimmermann, Nina; Engelhardt, Dirk; Bernhardt, Heinz.
This article deals with the importance of transportation in agriculture, focusing on energy consumption and average speed of different agricultural transport vehicles. Transportation of goods is an important section of both logistics and agricultural production; therefore this article concentrates on the linkage of these two fields of study – agriculture and logistics. Against this background, current trends in logistics and their significance for and impact on agriculture are defined first. The presented data were collected via a road trial comparing agricultural transport vehicles to those commonly deployed in road haulage. The advantages of the well-established tractor lie – of course – in its high cross-country mobility and the many resulting fields of...

The relationship between energy consumption, energy prices and economic growth: Time series evidence from Asian developing countries AgEcon
Asafu-Adjaye, John.
This paper estimates the causal relationships between energy consumption and income for India, Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand, using cointegration and error-correction modelling techniques. The results indicate that, in the short-run, unidirectional Granger causality runs from energy to income for India and Indonesia, while bidirectional Granger causality runs from energy to income for Thailand and the Philippines. In the case of Thailand and the Philippines, energy, income and prices are mutually causal. The study results do not support the view that energy and income are neutral with respect to each other, with the exception of Indonesia where neutrality is observed in the short-run.
